The speaker argues that the transition towards a low carbon green growth can be realized without a fundamental restructuring of the price structure, by internalizing ecological prices through environmental taxes and environmental fiscal reform. The two core features of environmental fiscal reforms, revenue neutrality and double dividend, are powerful tools for changing the price structure while stimulating economic growth. </span></span></div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"> <span><span>In the last twenty-five years, nationality laws have been the subject of polarizing debates. The first set of disputes concerned the content of these laws: scholars have emphasized several 'structural' oppositions (ascription vs. consent, <em>jus soli</em> vs. <em>jus sanguinis</em>) that reflect different national identities or meanings of citizenship. </span><span>The second and more recent set of debates has arisen from a crisis of legitimacy of "nationality." Nationality is said to have been undermined both by external competition from other affiliations and by its own inegalitarian qualities. </span></span></div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span>The presentation will show how old debates over the differences in the content of various states' nationality laws have become irrelevant. Nationality laws based on jus sanguinis (a French invention) or on jus soli (a tradition maintained by the British) have their own history developed independently of conceptions of national identity. The second set of debates has exaggerated the crisis of citizenship. In fact, far from being dépassé, National State citizenship has developed a new vitality. Once based, before the American and French Revolutions, on allegiance and protection of the King and transformed in the 19th century into a conditional status based on rights but also on duties, citizenship has recently reached a new stage of its development as an element of an unalienable sovereignty. Therefore, in the context of globalization, a new strategic collaboration between the individual and the state has emerged as their interests have converged.<span> </span></span></div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">This event aims to bring to the fore the most contemporary and pressing issues surrounding development and entrepreneurship. Although much is expected of entrepreneurship, it remains however a misunderstood terrain. The event will draw on a new publication entitled<b><i> Entrepreneurship and Economic Development</i></b> (edited by Wim Naudé and published by Palgrave Macmillan, December 2010) and the two year project at UNU-WIDER which led to it. Contributing to this richly dynamic area of research, and emphasizing the importance of institutions for understanding how entrepreneurs can play an innovative role to the greatest benefit of society, the book has been described as "...the single most informative work on the topic of entrepreneurship and economic development in print...a must read", (Prof. Roger R. Stough, George Mason University).</div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"> </div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">This event, based on the research and the book, will attempt to tackle the following questions:</div><ul style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><li align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">What is the nature of economic development and its relationship with various concepts of entrepreneurship? </li>
<li align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">What are the main concerns and issues in the measurement of entrepreneurship in relation to development? </li>
<li align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">What can we learn from the wider availability of data on entrepreneurship in developing countries? </li>
<li align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">How is the relationship between the state and entrepreneurship evolving? </li>
</ul><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">This event comes at a time when global development prospects have been dimmed by rising food prices, debt crises, and fiscal austerity in advanced economies, threats of currency wars, and the dangers of climate change. More and more, citizens in developing countries are relying on innovative private sector-driven initiatives to get by. At the event, Dr. Wim Naudé, editor of the UNU-WIDER publication, will explain with reference to its various chapters why the encouragement of entrepreneurship is important, why the state has a vital role to play, and what can be done to ensure that innovative and productive entrepreneurship flourish.</div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br />

It has near universal membership. It is the only treaty requiring the nuclear-weapon states to negotiate on nuclear disarmament. It is the cornerstone of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Yet it faces great challenges ahead.</span><span style="color: black;"> <br />
</span><span style="color: black;">Disarmament has been very slow - over 20,000 nuclear weapons remain, modernization programmes are underway, and nuclear deterrence is still practiced. Some proliferation concerns remain in three regions. Many non-nuclear-weapon states still face obstacles to peaceful uses of nuclear energy, while some non-NPT states have received special benefits.</span><span style="color: black;"> <br />
</span><span style="color: black;">The world is now exploring how to close the final chapter in the nuclear weapons story - their elimination through a universal, transparent, verifiable, and irreversible treaty, or a framework of binding legal instruments. The NPT Review Conference last May adopted a 64-point Action Plan to achieve the treaty's key goals, and to promote the establishment of a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. And the UN will have many important roles to play in all of these areas over the years ahead.</span></span></span></div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span>The event is part of the <b>UNU Midday Forum Programme</b>, which offers an intimate and informal platform to the UN permanent missions, the UN Secretariat, UN agencies, academia, NGOs and the private sector to discuss and exchange ideas and experiences on important topics related to the UN.</span></span></div><div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px; vertical-align: top;"><br />

As part of UNU Worldwide in New York Series, the United Nations University Office at the UN, New York (UNU-ONY), is organizing an event entitled "<i>The Interaction Between Food Systems and Health in Sub-Saharan Africa</i>". </div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">This event will focus on the most important interactions between food systems and human health, along with suggestions about policy priorities for African food systems that would improve human health. </div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The presentation will provide evidence of the potential health and nutrition gains from collaborative action by researchers, policy-makers and program implementers in the health and food sectors. It will be shown, preambulatorily, that the lack of reciprocal discourse between the worlds of research and policy implementation are harmful to health and nutrition, and it will be argued that tearing down the communication barriers between the two sectors would strengthen both sectors and make research, policies and programs more effective in solving both food and health-related problems. </div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><br />
</div><div align="justify" style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The presentation will largely be based on a newly published book, <i>The African Food System and Its Interactions with Human Health</i>, edited by Professor Per Pinstrup-Andersen, published by Cornell University Press in collaboration with the United Nations University. </div><div align="justify"><br />
