The United Nations University Office at the United Nations is organizing a discussion as a part of the Current Affairs Series entitled "2010 The Global Go-To Think Tanks Index" with Dr. James G. McGann, Director of Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program and Assistant Director of the International Relations Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. McGann is also a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and his latest book, Global Think Tanks, Policy Networks and Governance, was published in December 2010 (Routledge, Global Institutions Series).

As Dr. McGann notes in an article written for Foreign Policy, think tanks, also called governments in waiting, are needed by leaders around the world to provide independent analysis, help set policy agendas, and bridge the gap between academia and policy-making. Dr. McGann will discuss the findings from the annual Global Go-To Think Tank Ranking Report, a comprehensive ranking of the world's top think tanks, which serves as an insider's guide to 6500 think tanks around the globe.

The United Nations University is the academic and research arm of the United Nations. The UNU Office at the UN Current Affairs Series aims to address ongoing issues of relevance in the areas of international security, development and the environment. The goal is to bring up-to-date analysis on current events and crises by academics and policy makers who have firsthand knowledge and unique insights on the matters at hand. The programme's topics will also echo the items on the policy agenda of the UN and the UNU.
